Ellen Makes Lauren's Wish Come True

Ellen made a wish come true for 11 year old Lauren Bernardo, from Northwich in Cheshire when she met her  at the Horse of the Year Show at Birmingham's NEC last month. Lauren's wish was granted by Make-A-Wish Foundation® UK, the charity that grants magical wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.

Lauren is a keen horse rider and chose to meet Ellen because she regularly appears in Lauren’s favourite horse riding magazines. Before meeting Ellen, Lauren was able to enjoy some of the displays at the Horse of the Year Show, including the Pony Club Mounted Games and the Musical Ride of the Household Cavalry. She was then taken to the area where the riders were practising, to meet Ellen! Lauren spent some time with Ellen and asked her questions about her show jumping career, one of which was how old Ellen was when she did her first show? Ellen replied “aged five”, which is also when Lauren first started horse riding.

Ellen said: “I was really pleased to meet Lauren and make her wish come true. She seemed like a very special little girl and she is certainly horse-mad, which is good! I’m glad she had a fun day at the Horse of the Year Show and enjoyed the whole experience.“

Lauren was diagnosed in January 2010 with Rhabdomyosarcoma (a cancerous tumour of the muscles) just days before the family were due to go on holiday to Fuerteventura. Lauren's mum Cara initially noticed that something wasn’t quite right when Lauren woke up one morning with a puffy eye. Lauren was initially told by her doctor that it was an infection, then a burst blood vessel, before finally being sent to hospital; she was diagnosed within five days. Just a week later she had a Hickman Line inserted and had to endure three days of chemotherapy every three weeks for six months.

Cara said: “Lauren’s wish is something that we could never have arranged for her. The way her eyes lit up when she met Ellen was just lovely.”

There are currently 20,000 children and young people in the UK fighting a life-threatening illness and this year alone 1,200 children will turn to Make-A-Wish to have their wish granted. The charity needs to raise £5.5 million in 2011 to achieve this.

Ellen Gets Engaged to Henry!

Congratulations to Ellen and her actor boyfriend Henry Cavill who last night got engaged.

Henry surprised Ellen by popping the question in a Hollywood hotel having telephoned her dad Stephen earlier in the evening to ask his permission for his daughter's hand in marriage.

A delighted Ellen accepted straight away. She said: "I couldn't believe it when he asked me to marry him. I thought we were there to celebrate his birthday. It was such a surprise and I am so happy."

Ellen and Henry first met at the 2009 Olympia International Horse Show and have been seeing each other for just over a year.

Henry, who has starred in a number of films and TV shows including The Tudors, The Count of Monte Cristo and Stardust, was cast as the new Superman for the 2012 film Superman: Man of Steel.

Ellen buys two new horses

Ellen is excited to announce she has bought two new horses to join her already successful team of winners!

The horses, both from Sweden, have joined Ellen at her home near Barnsley and she is spending time getting to know them and training them for competitions later this year.

The first horse is called Arena UK Orlando (stable name Lenny) and is a nine-year-old Chestnut. He is described by Ellen as being very brave but with a big heart.

The second horse is a 10-year-old mare called Xemenia (stable name Minnie), who Ellen thinks has a very bright future ahead of her.

Ellen said: "I am really excited to have these horses. They are both very very easy horses and I am enjoying getting to know them. Lenny is really like Kanselier in his early years and I am hoping his career will be as long as successful as Kanselier's was.

"Minnie is an amazing horse. I first saw her when she was very young and then when I rode her recently I loved her. I have very high hopes for her future."

Kanselier to retire

Ellen's well-known speed horse Kanselier will be jumping his last every Horse of the Year Show class this Sunday, as he prepares to go into retirement.

The 18-year-old is one of Ellen's best known and well-loved horses, having hit the spotlight when the pair qualified for Olympia when Ellen was just 16 years old.

She will ride him for his last ever HOYS class - and possibly his last ever championship show - in the Speed Horse of the Year category on Sunday October 10th. Depending on how he fairs at this week's HOYS, vets will then decide whether he is fit enough to go on to compete in Olympia in December, or whether he should be retired immediately.

Kanselier

Ellen's dad Steven said: "Kanselier has won speed classes and grand prixs all over the world. He is one of the most prolific horses you will ever come across. There has never been a speed horse that has lasted as long as Kanselier has."

Kanselier is suffering from damage to the ligaments in one of his legs which are being monitored carefully by his vet.  If he has a good show at HOYS and the vet is happy with his leg, he will be able to compete in Olympia  before retiring for good.

"He is 18 but he looks and behaves like a nine-year-old," said Steven. You could carry on with him for another yearbut we don't want anything to happen to him, so we would rather retire him now than have something happen to him in the ring."

Ellen added: "Kanselier has always been such a gentleman and I am really really sad to see him retire. He has had a fantastic career and has been incredibly loyal to me. We really know and understand each other well and I'm going to miss him loads."
